BrickWars Sets Description

Lego 7962 Anakin's and Sebulba's Podracers were featured in Episode I: The Phantom Menace during the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace. After Qui-Gon Jinn placed a bet on Skywalker, saying that he would go free if he won, the young slave boy was inspired to win the race. If he did, he would not only secure his freedom, but win an expensive engine for Jinn, so that they could get off of Tatooine and return to Naboo with Padme Amidala. The beginning of the podrace eliminated many participants who proved to be unskilled or unfortunate enough to face some foul play. By the time of the third lap, only Anakin and Sebulba remained...

Anakin's podracer was a custom-built model. Anakin assembled it over a long period, getting parts from Watto's junkyard, where he worked as a repair man. It consisted of two large engines and a cockpit. The engines were Radon-Ulzer 620c turbines, which Anakin had modified. The fuel injection system was improved, resulting in better thrust. He also added on three yellow air scoops to each turbine, allowing the vehicle to make much sharper turns. The cockpit was relatively simple and could only fit the pilot. It was attached to the engines via steelton control cables. The podracer could reach speeds of up to 941kmph. Anakin painted the cockpit and parts of the engines blue as well, giving it a sense of individuality.

Sebulba's podracer was a Plug-F Mammoth manufactured by Collor Pondrat. As its name implies, it was a massive podracer. The front ends of the podracer's engines were designed in a split X formation and allowed the vehicle to reach speeds of up to 829kmph. The engines were powered by tradium power fluid pressurized with quold runium, which was activated with ionized injectrine. This gave the podracer a speed boost, but was illegal. The cockpit was attached to the split X engines by two steelton cables. Sebulba's podracer was large, intimidating, and lethal. He equipped it with many illegal attachments, such as buzz saws, flamethrowers and nail shooters. He also used the podracer's sturdy build to his advantage, as he would ram into opponents to send them off-course and into obstacles. His podracer was fairly slow compared to Anakin's and several other podracers, so his victories in races past were a result of his cheating and not his skill as a podracer.

The Lego 7962 Anakin's and Sebulba's Podracers contains 810 pieces and includes 5 minifigures.

Pro's:
- First Pod Racer set in 10 years.
- First redesign of Anakin's and Sebulba's pod racers since they were last out in 1999.
- Nice large set with lots of pieces (810).
- Reasonable per brick price of $0.11.
- Nice detailed updated Watto & Sebulba mini-figures.

Con's: - Only 2 pod racers (the 7171 Mos Espa Podrace set had 3, plus accessories for the figures that were spectators)
- Anakin has a two sided head (with and without goggles for racing) but didn't have any hair piece to wear when not in his racer or wearing his racing helmet.

I was glad to see a new Pod Racer set, and when I got it I was not disappointed when building it. The Pod Racers themselves are nice. Sitting side by side with their 1999 versions they really show how far Lego Star Wars sets have come in the 12 years since they first came out.

I like how they use transparent Technic bricks to join the pods to the engines this time, they give a better impression of floating in air than did the tan plates used in the 7171 Mos Espa Podrace set.

The details of the pod racers is better too. One part of the design I especially like is how they made the stands this time. In the 7171 Mos Espa Podrace they made them each sit on 3 legs of stacked tan bricks, but this time they made a tan stand base which the transparent Technic bricks slide into. They are not snapped together so when the builder wants to play a pod race the stand base comes off and the Technic pieces that make the upper part of the stand become a handle to hold the pod racers with as you "fly' them.

Even with one vertical leg holding them up the pod racers are well balanced, with or without the mini-figs in them and do not easily fall over. If you take a pod or a major part of an engine off (to pretend your characters are working/repairing them) then the balance is lost.

One neat detail (I'm not sure if it was intended or not) but when the pods are on their stands they can wobble a bit if the table or whatever they are sitting on moves, but that gives them a look of hovering/flying as they wobble.

Even the price of this set is good. It is an MSRP of $89.99 for 810 pcs, which works out to $0.11 per brick. The 7171 Mos Espa Podrace set from 1999 was an MSRP of $99.99 for 894 pcs, which worked out to be $0.11 per brick.

Overall I give this set a 9.75 of 10. The con's are easily outweighed by the pro's and had they included one piece (hair for Anakin when not in his pod) I would give it a perfect 10.

I really would like to see the other pod racers get the same update treatment in the near future.
