BrickWars Sets Description

Lego 7961 Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator was a prototype stealth ship used by Darth Maul. It was also known as the Scimitar. Maul used the ship to venture to the planet of Naboo, where he fought Jedis Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. It had a spherical cockpit, and on either side of the command center were pairs of folding wings. The long, front end of the ship housed things such as compartments where Maul kept his equipment. It was manufactured by Republic Sienar Systems, and was actually a heavily modified version of their Star Courier. It was armed with six hidden solar ionization cannons, a Sienar X-C2 ion drive array for an engine, and featured on onboard hyperdrive system. Additionally, it sported a highly advanced cloaking device powered by stygium, which allowed Maul to sneak past enemies and radars with little effort. In the storage compartments of his ship, he kept the Bloodfin, his personal speeder bike, as well as probe, interrogation and security droids.

The Lego 7961 Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator contains 479 pieces and includes 4 minifigures.

Pro's:
- The set is well designed and once built doesn't easily come apart.
- Scale of the ship to the mini-figure seems pretty close to 1:1.
- Folding front landing gear allow for a clean look when in flight mode, but makes a nice stable base when the ship is in landed mode.
- Darth Maul mini-figure includes new "horns" piece and cloak hood piece so the builder has the option of how to have him (hood up or down).
- All of Darth Maul's equipment (Sith speeder, Sith probe droids, & light saber) have nicely designed storage place on the ship.

Con's:
- One of the plates in the set was found to be warped out of shape upon opening of the package.
- Two decals do not stay adhered to the bricks they are applied to.
- The ship doesn't hold all the mini-figures the set comes with.
- High price for the set size.

Before I give my overall rating of the set I need to go into detail regarding the cons.

A 12 x 4 dark grey plate which is part of the nose section of the ship was warped and didn't lay flat on a flat surface. The warping didn't look like it was damage in shipment, more a flaw in the molding process (got hot after molding or was removed from the mold too soon. This is a rare quality issue that I hardly ever see with Lego. I'm not sue if this is common with this set, others will have to share what they find in the sets they buy and open. Once built this plate was flattened out by the other bricks connected to it, but a close examination could see a gap caused by the warp and over time this could possibly cause bricks to work loose.

Two of the decals are applied to two slopped 2 x 3 dark grey bricks. Those bricks on the sloped surface have a texture to them and the decals do not stay adhered to them as well as the other decals stay adhered to the other smooth (non-textured) bricks or plates they are applied to. In less than a weeks time these two decals were barely holding on to the brick, and all this set was doing was sitting on display. Had it been a set that was played with the decals may well have come off completely and been lost or the glue side contaminated with dirt or debris preventing them from being re-applied. I had to use clear tape cut to the size of the decal in one dimension and wider than the brick in another (decal size with little "wings") to apply over the decals then wrap around the sides of the brick so the tape would adhere to the smooth surface of the brick to keep the decals in place.

The set comes with 4 mini-figures but the ship is only designed to hold 1 mini-figure, Darth Maul. The ship never carried all 4 characters in the film so the ship is accurate in that it only carries Darth Maul. The 3 other mini-figures it comes with are all good guys, and are well made, but it would be more appropriate for them to come with a Royal Naboo Cruiser set if Lego ever makes one (hint to Lego).

At $74.99 (at Toys-R-Us) the price is high for the number of bricks it contains (479 pcs, $0.16 per pc), but I was able to take advantage of a rare Star Wars Lego sale at Toys-R-Us ($25 off any purchase of $100 or more) and bought the set for $63.97. I had to buy 2 sets to get this lower price but it brought the per set price much closer to what I would expect a set of this size to have been sold for in previous years ($49.99 to $59.99 price range, or $0.10 to $0.13 per pc).

Overall I would give the set an 8 out of 10, with the price per brick ratio and the decal issue being the major problems.

I am assuming the one warped plate is a rare issue, if that is found to be a common issue for this set I would reduce the rating to 7 out of 10.
